Autumnal Fantasia by Wrapture Gems Jewellery
by Carrie Moore
(North Island, New Zealand)
The inspiration for this design came from the opal itself and it's beautiful autumnal colours.
Autumn is such a showy season so I wanted to create a setting that celebrated the spectrum of colours found in the opal & the season.
It features a 4.95 carat solid opal from Coober Pedy,Australia, complimented by a deep copper faceted Oregon Sunstone.
A rich red garnet, vibrant green peridot & a stunning bright golden citrine completes the spectrum.
The basis of the design is thick sterling silver cut and polished with a high sheen and a contrasting sparkle finish.
For the wirewrapped portion I used 930 argentium sterling silver & 14kt yellow gold-filled wire.
The pendant measure 2 inches (53mm) from top to bottom and features 2 bails which enable the pendant worn in 2 different ways.
I am a Jewelry Artist living in beautiful New Zealand, home of the "Flight of the Concordes" and "Lord of the Rings".
I enjoy working with opal, rare and unique genuine 100% natural gems and pearls.
I am fascinated with natures bounty in the realm of gemstones and do my best to create a setting to enhance the beauty of the gemstone I am working with.
I have always loved jewellery and have had a fascination for precious and semi-precious gemstones since I was child. I remember collecting rocks and waiting for them to reveal their hidden beauty as they came out of the lapidary tumbler in my Dads workshop.
Opal is a particular passion of mine and I cut my own freeform solid opals for use in my jewellery designs. I am loathe to grind away any of the beautiful fire so I leave most of my opal pieces in free-form shape. This lends itself to simple designs or to more intricate wire-woven techniques and metal smithing.
I use precious metals, in the form of high quality argentium 930 (tarnish resistant) sterling silver wire & 14kt gold-filled wire for wire-weaving, sterling silver & solid karat gold for metal work & bails, caps, rings & earring fittings.
Although I often design ahead with wire-work; the stones seem to influence what I create for them & the design can evolve during the process. I incorporate precious and semi-precious gems into my work as accent stones.
My aim is to create unique & beautiful art to wear & to treasure for years to come……
